A Midsummer Night's Dream

Notes from our director, Rebecca Seabaugh:

Rehearsal Schedule will likely be Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for about 3 hours in the evening. The
way the play is structured, you will not have to be present at every rehearsal. I will block and rehearse the
various groups separately. Your presence will be required at tech and dress rehearsals EVERY evening the
week of August 4th through August 7th , as well as performances August 8th , 9th & 10th.

Two sentence synopsis – A whole bunch of folks experience some crazy magical stuff in the woods. Then, an
offstage triple wedding and an onstage performance of the “tedious and brief scene” of Pyramus and Thisbe as
part of the celebrations.

Brief Synopsis: A Duke prepares to wed his battle-won Amazonian Queen. Four head-strong young people get
lost in the woods. A fairy called Puck enchants some of the youth creating chaos among them. A group of
Mechanicals (working class folks) prepare to perform a play and decide to hold their rehearsal in a clearing in
the woods. Meanwhile, the fairy King and Queen are quarrelling, in these same woods, over possession of a
magical child. Enchantments and transformations abound creating much confusion and hilarity. Ultimately,
everything and everyone is set right creating a grand happy ending for all!

Auditions

Please prepare a classical monologue. (1 min to 4 mins long).  Monologue options are linked here, but please feel free to choose a different piece. I ask that you choose something from among the writings of Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, Christopher Marlowe, John Milton and the likes, or the Greeks. The piece does not need to be memorized. Please avoid monologues in which the character is drunk.

In an effort to be more environmentally minded, I will not be printing off monologues to leave on the porch behind the TLT building. For your convenience I will add links to several monologues on the TLT website. I did not pick a monologue for every named character in the play. The monologues I’ve chosen are available to any actor to use for audition purposes. For example, you could use Oberon’s monologue to audition for a different male or female representing character. But, again, you may choose your own monologue. The internet and libraries are great places to look for monologues.

What we will be looking/listening for:

  • Diction and clarity (Can we understand you?)

  • Ability to communicate intentions (Do YOU understand what the character is saying/meaning? Are you making it clear to the audience?)

  • Volume UP (PROJECT! Last time I directed this play, we did it WITHOUT mics!!)

  • Physicality (happy/sad/defeated/old/confident-Your body language should match the mood and personality of the character in the piece.)

  • Comfort with heightened language (Language used specifically to create impact/meaning via sound and/or structure; i.e. alliteration or rhyme)

  • Use of natural voice. No accents. Speak properly. Use your own natural tone.

  • HAVE FUN!! Enjoy yourself!

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on.” The Tempest, Act IV, Scene I

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their
entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts…” As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII

**I would like to schedule a read-through of the script with the entire cast sometime between
May 20th and May 25 th . Blocking rehearsals will begin Sunday, May 26th. I will get a rehearsal
schedule out ASAP following casting.**
